Shafat is the name of five people in the Old Testament .

etymology

The Hebrew personal name שָׁפָט šāfāt is the short form of a verb sentence name in which only the predicate is retained, while the subject, which forms the theophoric element , has been omitted. The root שׁפט šft means “get right” and so the translation “(God) got right” results for the name. Long forms that are traced back to the same root and have the same meaning the person's name Shephatiah (שְׁפַטְיָה šəfatjāh ) Elishaphat (אֱלִישָׁפָט 'älîšāfāt ) and Jehoshaphat (יְהוֹשָׁפָט jəhôšāfāt and יֹושָׁפָט Josafat ).

The Septuagint gives the name in different ways, namely as Σαφατ safat (in Num 13,5  LXX , 1 Kings 19,16  LXX, 19 LXX and 2 Kings 3,11  LXX ), in 2 Kings 6,31  LXX the name is missing , 1 Chr 3,22  LXX stands for Σαφαθ Safat . In 1 Chr 5,12  LXX the verse “Janai and Shafat” is reproduced with Ιανι ὁ γραμματεὺς iani ho grammateus “Iani, the scribe” and thus seems to presuppose a Hebrew text יַעְנַי הַסֹּפֵר ja'naj hassofer . In 1 Chr 27.29  LXX the name is finally written Σωφατ Sōfat .

Shafat, son of Horis

In Num 13  EU , Moses is commissioned by YHWH to send out spies to explore the land of Canaan , one from each tribe. Schafat, the son of Horis, is sent for the tribe of Simeon ( Num 13.5  EU ).

Shafat, Elisha's father

In 1 Kings 19.16  EU, 19 EU , 2 Kings 3.11  EU and 6.31 EU , Shafat is mentioned as the father of the prophet Elisha . This comes from Abel-Mehola.

Shafat, son of Sheechanja

1 Chr 3,22  EU mentions Shafat as the youngest son of Shechanjas together with his brothers Schemaja , Hattusch, Jigal , Bariach and Nearja. He is afifth generationdescendant of King Jehoiachin and the23rd generation ofKing David's descendant.

Shafat, Gadite

In 1 Chr 5.12  EU Shafat is a head of the tribe of Gad after Joël , Shafam and Janai. He lived in the bashan . It is possible that the name at this point came from a typographical error. The Septuagint narrates at this point “Iani, the scribe”, which could be traced back to the Hebrew text יַעְנַי הַסֹּפֵר ja'naj hassofer .

Shafat, son of Adlais

Finally, in 1 Chr 27.29  EU, Shafat is an administrator of King David. He oversaw the cattle in the valleys.
