Joel or Joël is a male given name of biblical origin, which also occurs as a family name . The first name comes from the Hebrew יוֹאֵל and means ' YHWH is God'. Jo stands for YHWH or 'the Lord', el is a divine title adopted from the Canaanite environment as an alias for YHWH in the Bible (see בֵּית אֵל Beth el 'House of El') and means 'God'. The first name is used in many Christian countries and pronounced differently accordingly. In German, Joel is stressed on the first syllable and pronounced as it is spelled, / joel /.
