Joel Smoller
Joel Alan Smoller (born January 2, 1936 in New York City , † September 27, 2017 ) was an American mathematician who dealt with partial differential equations .
Live and act
Smoller graduated from Brooklyn College and received his PhD in functional analysis from Purdue University in 1963 . He then went to the University of Michigan , where he received a full professorship in 1969 and was on the Lamberto Cesari Chair of Mathematics from 1998. In 1996 he received the University of Michigan Excellence of Research Award. In 2003 he was a Rothschild Professor at the University of Cambridge .
Smoller dealt with the mathematical treatment of reaction-diffusion equations , the Navier-Stokes equations , bifurcation theory , generalizations of the Conley index and shock waves in general relativity (partly with his student Blake Temple). Here he found the first exact solutions with Temple (for the Einstein field equations for ideal liquids ). He also worked on other equations of mathematical physics in the context of general relativity (such as the Dirac equation and wave equation in the Kerr-Newman metric of rotating black holes and Einstein-Yang-Mills equations). In his own words in response to the award of the Birkhoff Prize, he is primarily interested in breaking new mathematical ground when dealing with special physical problems.
In 1980/81 he was a Guggenheim Fellow . From 2005 to 2008 he was a Senior Humboldt Fellow.
In 2009 he received the Birkhoff Prize for Applied Mathematics from the American Mathematical Society and SIAM . He was a fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
Smoller lived in Ann Arbor with his family . He died in 2017 after a long illness.
