Joel El-Qalqili

Joel El-Qalqili (born June 21, 1984 in Berlin ) is a former German rower . He won the world championship title twice in the U23 age group in the lightweight four-man without a helmsman and the German championships in the lightweight two-man without a helmsman .

Career

Joel El-Qalqili began his rowing career with a bronze medal in double sculls at the 2000 youth championship. In 2001, El-Qalqili learned to row oars , among others through his cousin Jan Herzog and his brother Iradj El-Qalqili . In 2002 El-Qalqili was able to become German youth champion in eighth and won a bronze medal in four without a helmsman . As the batsman of the German junior eight, he finished fourth at the U19 World Championships in 2002. In 2003 El-Qalqili switched to the lightweight camp and became German U23 champion in the easy eight and runner-up in the easy U23 four without helmsman | without. In 2004 El-Qalqili trained in Hamburg under Rita Hendes . He won the U23 junior title in an easy four and eight and won the U23 world championship in an easy four . In 2005 El-Qalqili repeated the previous year in terms of sport and was twice German U23 champion and again U23 world champion in the easy foursome.

With his long-term partner Ole Rückbrodt , El-Qalqili started 2006 in good shape by taking second place in the two-man races of the German Rowing Association . At the 2006 World Championships in the open age group, he was able to qualify for the Olympic easy foursome without. The team with El-Qalqili missed the final and reached seventh place. In the following year El-Qalqili slipped out of the top team, but was able to win the World Cup silver medal in Munich behind the Dutch selection as a batsman with the non-Olympic easy eighth . biography

He found rowing through friends at the Potsdam Rowing Club Germania . His cousin is the rower Jan Herzog . His mother is a born von Quernheim from Berlin, his father Musa El-Qalqili comes from Qalqiliya on the West Bank in the Palestinian Territories . El-Qalqili graduated from high school in Berlin and did community service as a top athlete. From 2004 to 2010 he studied law at the Bucerius Law School in Hamburg . He worked as a lawyer in Frankfurt, but now lives and works again in Berlin.

In addition to his main job, El-Qalqili publishes socially critical and satirical audio books.
