Iradj El-Qalqili

Iradj Sheikh El-Qalqili (born March 24, 1975 in Berlin ) is a former German rower .

El-Qalqili was a member of the German national rowing team for the Rowing World Cup in 1998 and 1999 and has rowed numerous medals (six gold, six silver, six bronze) at German (vintage) championships. He was involved in the sports sector in the Palestinian Territories and was an honorary board member of the Palestinian Rowing Association. Because of humanitarian work in the Gaza Strip in 2004, he was appointed sheikh by Bedouin tribes .

El-Qalqili was married to the German rower Kerstin Kowalski , his brother Joel and his cousin Jan Herzog are also former German rowers.

Athletic career

Iradj El-Qalqili began his rowing career at the Berlin Rowing Club , briefly switched to the Potsdam Rowing Club Germania and ended his career with the rowing company Wiking (Berlin) after the 1999 season. His greatest international successes were two appearances at the Rowing World Cup in the Years 1998 and 1999 in the two without a helmsman and in the eight of the lightweights . At the rowing world championships he was not used. In the German championship rowing he won two silver and five bronze medals from 1994 to 1999. The coaches Rita Hendes and Martin Strohmenger had the greatest influence on his short sporting career.

As a trainer and official, El-Qalqili was responsible for the teams of the Palestinian Rowing Association at the Junior World Championships in 2002 and 2003, the Asian Olympic qualification in 2004, and the World Rowing Championships in 2005 and 2006 . He also looked after the university rowing team during his stay at Wharton Business School .

Engagement in Palestine

Iradj El-Qalqili has supported the United Nations in the fight against corruption in the Palestinian Authority. He also did youth work in Palestinian rowing from 2003 to 2007 from Germany and the USA. In the Palestinian Rowing Association he held the position of "Director of European Affairs". The focus of the work was a rowing ergometer project for children and young people in the Gaza Strip and the organization of international regattas by Mark Gerban and some young athletes.
