Joel Monaghan (born April 22, 1982 ) is an Australian rugby league player. He plays for the Warrington Wolves in the Super League and has played for the Australian national team and in the State of Origin tournament for New South Wales. His older brother Michael Monaghan is also a rugby league player.
Careers in the NRL
Monaghan played rugby at Erindale College, where he was trained by Neil Henry, who later became the NRL coach. He also played rugby for the Australian Schoolboys in 2000. In 2001 he made his NRL debut for the Canberra Raiders against the Penrith Panthers in the 10th round. He played for the next four seasons with the Raiders before joining the Sydney Roosters in 2005 , where he made his debut in a game against arch-rivals South Sydney Rabbitohs . In 2006 he missed most of the season due to knee injuries. In 2007 he had a very successful season in which he put 13 attempts in 27 games.
In 2008 Monaghan returned to the Raiders for a season and won the Mal Meninga Medal as the best player in the Raiders. In the same year he took part in the Rugby League World Cup with Australia . His debut was on October 26, 2008 in the group stage against New Zealand. In the final against New Zealand he made the mistake of tackling Lance Hohaia 10 minutes before the end of the game, even though he was not in possession of the ball. That led to a penalty attempt, so that 10 minutes before the end Australia was no longer 2, but 8 points behind. New Zealand won the game 34:20.
He left the Raiders in 2010 after a photographer posted a photo of him simulating a blow job with a dog , taken during Mad Monday celebrations , on Twitter . The incident was discussed by media around the world.
Change to the Super League
On December 3, 2010, it was announced that Monaghan had signed a one-year contract with the Warrington Wolves. His brother Michael Monaghan has been playing there since 2008.
On June 10, 2011 he took part with the Exiles in an International Origin game against England. In 2012 he played another game.
In 2013 he reached the Super League Grand Final with the Wolves, which they lost 30:16 to the Wigan Warriors . He put a try in the game. In 2014 he was the player with the most tries with 28 attempts.
