Joel Louis Lebowitz (born May 10, 1930 in Taceva , Czechoslovakia ) is an American physicist . His research area is statistical physics .

Life

Lebowitz was born in Taceva, then part of the Czech Republic. During the Second World War he and his family were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau because of his Jewish origins , where his parents and sister died in 1944. Joel survived and went to the USA after the war . There he attended a Jewish school and studied at Brooklyn College (1952 BS ) and Syracuse University (1955 MS ). He did his Ph. D. in 1956 with Peter Bergmann . As a postdoc he worked first with Lars Onsager at Yale , then from 1957 at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken . In 1959 he received a professorship at Yeshiva University . He has been with Rutgers University since 1977 .

For his achievements in physics Lebowitz in 1992 was awarded the Boltzmann Medal of IUPAP , 1993 Max Planck Research Award (jointly with Herbert Spohn , University of Munich ), 2000 the Henri Poincaré Prize , 2001 Volterra Award and 2007 Max Planck Medal from the DPG .

Lebowitz is also actively committed to human rights. Among other things, he supported persecuted scientists in the Soviet Union . For this commitment he received the Nicholson Medal of the American Physical Society in 1994 . In 2014, he was awarded the Grande médaille de l'Académie des sciences for scientific and humanitarian achievements .

Lebowitz is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and was temporarily President of the New York Academy of Sciences . He was one of the founders of the Journal of Statistical Physics in 1975 . Joel Lebowitz and Cyril Domb are the editor of the well-known series of books on phase transitions : Phase Transitions and Critical Phenomena . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 1966 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .

Lebowitz married Estelle Mandelbaum († December 1996) on June 21, 1953 and Ann Keay Beneduce on June 3, 1999.

Lebowitz is considered one of the most influential researchers in the field of statistical physics . His work includes methods for calculating the thermodynamic limit of many-body systems (especially with regard to Coulomb interaction ) as well as work on phase transitions , the Ising and Hubbard models , non-equilibrium thermodynamics , heat conduction equations and hydrodynamics . He was a pioneer in molecular dynamics in the 1960s, collaborating with Loup Verlet and Jerome K. Percus in 1967 .
