Joel Perry (musician)

Joel Perry (* 1953 ; † September 2017 ) is an American jazz guitarist .

Live and act

Perry earned a bachelor's ( magna cum laude ) and master's degree in music education from the University of Buffalo , and a master's degree in guitar performance from New Jersey City State University . Over the course of his musical career he has performed with Johnny Copeland (with whom he toured West Africa), Papa John Creach , Ruth Brown , Big Joe Turner , LaVern Baker , Joni Mitchell , Herb Ellis , Rosemary Clooney , Lesley Gore , Margaret Whiting , Eddie Fisher , James Cotton , Percy France , Leon Thomas , Jimmy Dawkins , Stevie Ray Vaughan , Frank Foster , Frank Wess , Ken Peplowski and Al Hibbler .

Perry has worked on recordings for Richard Shulman , Jonny Holtzman , Pat Cuttitta and the Lou Caputo Not So Big Band; In 1990 he played the solo album Rainbow Skylight , on which Perry interpreted jazz standards such as " Jitterbug Waltz ", " Goodbye Pork Pie Hat ", " Honeysuckle Rose " and " Old Devil Moon ". In the field of jazz, he was involved in six recording sessions between 1979 and 2015.

Perry teaches blues, jazz and classical guitar playing at the Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts in Berkeley Heights . He is a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences , the New Jersey Association for Jazz Education, Music Educators National Conference, and the American Choral Directors Association . In 2016, Perry received the New Jersey Jazz Education Achievement Award from the New Jersey Association of Jazz Educators (NJAJE).
