Joel Weisman
Joel Weisman (born February 20, 1943 in Newark , New Jersey , † July 18, 2009 in Westwood, Los Angeles ) was an internal medicine doctor and AIDS researcher.
Life
Weisman graduated from the Kansas City College of Osteopathy , now the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, in 1970 .
Publications
Together with Michael S. Gottlieb from the UCLA Medical Center , Joel Weismann reported in a publication dated June 4, 1981 in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) of the United States health authority Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about an accumulation of rare pneumonia caused by an otherwise harmless germ. This publication is considered to be the first mention of the then unknown immunodeficiency disease AIDS . An expanded publication appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine in December 1981 . It was unknown at the time that AIDS was caused by a virus.
Act
Weisman has been involved in setting up the Aids Project Los Angeles (APLA) since 1983 . Weisman served on the board of directors of The American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) , which Gottlieb and Mathilde Krim co-founded , from 1988 to 1992 as chairman. Together with other doctors, Weisman treated patients with HIV or AIDS in the Pacific Oaks Medical Group . In his circle of friends, Weisman u. a. also his partner Timothy Bogue through the illness. His speech at the Commitment to Life V event marks the beginning of a national effort by the US government to fight AIDS . At Sherman Oaks Community Hospital , Weisman built the first infirmary, the Immune Suppressed Unit, for AIDS patients in the USA. Weisman died in Westwood , Los Angeles in 2009 after a long illness of heart disease . He leaves behind a partner, daughter and granddaughter.
Honors
- Together with Bette Midler , Sidney Sheinberg and Barry Krost , Weisman received the Commitment to Life award at the Commitment to Life V event in 1991 .
