Hori Ryujo
Hori Ryūjo ( Japanese 堀 柳 女 , real name Yamada Matsue ( 山田 松枝 ); * August 25, 1897 Tokyo Prefecture ; † December 9, 1984 ) was a Japanese doll maker who was named a living national treasure in 1955 in the category: doll manufacture has been.
Life
Ryujo in 1897, the third daughter of a family from the former Sakura - feud born in Tokyo. She originally wanted to be a painter, but her plans changed when she came into contact with doll-making and founded a doll-making club ( 人形 制作 グ ル ー プ ) with Takehisa Yumeji . In 1934 she founded the Kōjutsukai ( 甲戌 会 ) with the dollmakers Noguchi Mitsuhiko (1896–1977) and Kagoshima Juzō (1898–1982), which set the doll production in motion.
Hori specialized in the production of "Ishō dolls" ( 衣裳 人形 , ~ ningyō , literally: dolls in a splendid wardrobe). In 1950 she became the first woman to be a member of the award committee of the "Japanese Arts and Crafts Society" ( 日本 工 芸 会 ; Nihon kōgeikai ). Her main works include “Toro” ( 瀞 , Serenity ), which is shown among others in the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo.

Remarks
- ^ "Ishō dolls" belonged to the trousseau of daughters from families of the warrior nobility in the Edo period . As a wedding gift, the dolls had the task of keeping bad luck away from the new household.
