The Ordnance Survey Landranger Map 73 shows "Horsbrugh Castle" and "Horsbrugh Ford", while the nearby settlement is called "Nether Horsburgh". The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments in Scotland (RCAHMS) also lists the castle ruins as “Horsburgh Castle”, but notes: “The name is undoubtedly 'Horsbrugh Castle', which is confirmed by the spelling of local farm names etc. a sign on the castle ruins reads: 'A memorial to RT Hon. Baroness Horsbrugh of Horsbrugh 1869–1969' ". However, many sources state “Horsburgh Castle”.
