Horst Herper (born June 11, 1936 in Echtz near Düren ) is a former German boxer . He won a bronze medal in the lightweight at the European Amateur Championship in 1957 .

Career

Horst Herper began boxing as a teenager with the Pugilists (FK) Düren in 1952. Over the years he developed into a powerful and technically adept southpaw. He later moved from FK Düren to FK Düsseldorf . He was a driver by profession.

In 1956, Horst Herper fought his way to the final at the German lightweight amateur boxer championship, in which he lost to the 1955 European champion Harry Kurschat from Berlin by breaking off in the third round. As German runner-up, he took part in the lightweight in September 1956 at the all-German Olympic elimination tournament in Berlin (West and East). He won there in his first fight over the GDR champion Wolfgang Labahn from Schwerin on points, but lost in the decisive final fight against Harry Kurschat, who was therefore allowed to start at the Olympic Games in Melbourne and won the silver medal there.

In May 1957 Horst Herper represented the colors of the Federal Republic of Germany at the European Championships in Prague. He won there in the lightweight over Iwan Angelow, Bulgaria and Istvan Kisfalvi from Hungary on points, but lost in the semifinals against Olli Mäki from Finland on points. He won an EM bronze medal with it. In the same year he was also the first German lightweight champion. In the final he defeated Dieter Johannpeter from MBR Hamm, one of ten boxing brothers, on points.

In 1958 there were no international championships. Horst Herper became German lightweight champion for the second time this year. In the final he again defeated Dieter Johannpeter on points. In November 1958 he came in two international battles against the Soviet Union in Moscow to notable victories over Gennadi Kakoschkin and Anatoli Lagetko. In February 1959 he defeated the European champion from 1957 Kazimierz Paździor on points in an international match against Poland in Essen . In May 1959 he competed at the European Championships in Lucerne. He won there in the lightweight in his first fight over Pierre Tirlo from Belgium by breaking off in the 1st round and in his second fight over Gennadi Kakoschkin on points (4: 1). In the quarterfinals he lost again to Olli Mäki, which he eliminated and came in 5th place. In November 1959, with a point victory over Wilhelm Bley from Backnang, he became German champion for the third time.

In the next few years, when Horst Herper was still active, he was never able to fully build on the successes of 1956 to 1959 due to frequent injuries. In July 1960 he represented the DABV in the all-German Olympic qualification. He fought in the light welterweight division and was defeated in Schwerin against Rühl from SC Tractor Schwerin on points. He missed the Olympics again.

In 1962 he achieved a remarkable success in Munich in an international match against Poland when he defeated Jan Szczepanski on points in the lightweight .

Shortly thereafter, he ended his career without ever becoming a professional boxer.
