Horst Schmid

Horst Adolph Louis Schmid (* 1933 in Munich ) is a German-Canadian politician, businessman and chairman of the supervisory board of Deep Well Oil & Gas Incorporation.

Life

He immigrated to Canada in 1952 at the age of 19 and worked as a miner in Yelloknife in a gold mine and in the Northwest Territories. After further training, he then worked as an auditor and self-employed businessman in the province of Alberta . In 1956, he moved to Edmonton and began studying business , finance, and business psychology at the University of Toronto, where he completed his PhD. Together with a partner, he established an export company for industrial and consumer goods.

His political career began in 1971. Schmid ran for a seat in the new constituency "Edmonton-Avonmore" for the Progressive Conservative Party and was the first immigrant to win against two native candidates after World War II (result: Progressive Conservative Party ... 3913 votes ( Dr Horst A. Schmid); New Democratic Party ... 1303 votes and Liberal Party ... 257 votes). During his tenure from 1971 to 1986, he held various ministerial posts and was a member of the Alberta Legislative Assembly in the New District of Edmonton-Avonmore:

  • Minister for Youth, Culture and Sport: September 10, 1971 to March 1975.
  • Government Minister for Services and Culture: from March 1975 to March 1979.
  • Minister of State for Economic Development (International Trade): from 1979 to November 1982.
  • Minister for International Trade: from November 1982 to May 1986.
  • Minister for Tourism: from November 1, 1985 to May 1986.

After his electoral defeat in the general elections in the Province of Alberta in 1986 against Marie Laing from the new Democratic Party, Schmid withdrew from politics and became active again in the economy. a. as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deep Well Oil & Gas Inc.

Awards

In 2005 he received the "Lifetime Achievement Award" for exceptional service over decades to the German-speaking community of Alberta .
