Charlotte Francès Hortense Parent (born March 22, 1837 in London , † January 12, 1929 in Paris ) was a French music teacher, pianist and composer. She founded in 1882 in Paris, the Association pour l'enseignement professionnel du piano and the École préparatoire au professorat du piano , which she led until her death. She also wrote piano pedagogical textbooks and teaching materials.

Life

Hortense Parent, daughter of French parents, spent the first years of life in England and Scotland. She came to Paris around 1850 and initially received piano lessons from Félix Le Couppey . From 1853 to 1857 she studied harmony and piano accompaniment at the Conservatoire de Paris with Catherine-Cecilia-Carolina-Emma Dufresne ( Premier Prix 1855) and piano with Louise Farrenc ( Premier Prix 1857). Already during her student days she published her own compositions. She made her debut as a pianist in Strasbourg in 1858 with works by Henri Herz and Julius Schulhoff . She also gave concerts in London. In the following years she devoted herself increasingly to teaching. She presented her students once a year at a concert in the Salle Erard.

Hortense Parent published her first educational book L'Étude du piano, manuel de l'élève, conseils pratiques in 1872 , which is also one of her most important writings. She dedicated it to Félix Le Couppey, whose pedagogical influence on her own work she repeatedly emphasized in later years. L'Étude du piano is aimed directly at the learners and gives advice in dialogue form on practicing all essential elements of piano technique, but also addresses general topics such as playing by heart or the ability to express themselves.

In 1882, Hortense Parent founded a school to train piano teachers. This École préparatoire au professorat du piano was the first institution of its kind. It wanted to raise the pedagogical level of elementary piano lessons, which were often given by unskilled women who were forced, for example, to study piano. B. to feed after the death of the husband or father. These women could attend Parents School at low cost or even get scholarships. The school also had an extensive library of loanable textbooks and sheet music. It was supported by an association, the Association pour l'enseignement professionnel du piano , also founded in 1882 . From 1891 there was also an École d'application at which the women could gain practical teaching experience during their training.

Hortense Parent presented her pedagogy in detail in several books ( Exposition de ma méthode d'enseignement , La Méthode dans le travail, etc.). She wrote practical teaching material ( Les Bases du mécanisme , Rythme & mesure , Gammes et Arpèges ), which was largely limited to exercises and was to be supplemented in class by études and pieces by other composers. What is new is the concept she has developed for learning to read notes, which works with colors ( lecture des notes , see fig.).

In 1896 and 1897, Hortense Parent gave a total of six lectures at the Sorbonne on her teaching method and school. In 1900 she gave a lecture at the Congrès international de l'histoire de la musique , which took place as part of the World Exhibition in Paris.

Parents pupils included opera singer Jane Bathori and pianist and music teacher Victoria Cartier .
