The Hortillonnages of Amiens (on Pikardisch  : ches hortillonnaches Anmiens ) are applied in wetlands allotments, probably, but in any case the people of since the time of Roman rule since the Middle Ages the supply Amiens served with fruits and vegetables. Of the original 10,000 hectare area, 300 hectares still exist today. Since the 1950s, the cultivation of vegetables in the Hortillonages has declined considerably. Ten gardeners are currently cultivating around 25 hectares of land. The remaining area consists of allotment gardens and serves as a second residence for recreational purposes.

The Hortillonage are now a tourist attraction. In addition to hiking trails, trips with long, flat boats with an inclined bow, originally the means of transport for vegetable farmers, are offered, but electric boats are increasingly being used. The number of visitors is given as around 100,000 annually.

The volunteer organization "SOS-Hortillonages" looks after the area and is committed to its preservation.

The Hortillonnages are located in the Somme and Avre valleys above the city in the municipalities of Camon , Lamotte-Brebière , Longueau and Rivery and still cover an area of ​​around 300 ha (compared to around 10,000 ha originally).

Flora and fauna

Water lilies, reeds, meadow foxtail and arrowhead, coot and great crested grebe, tench, aiteln, eel and pike are represented.

Administration union

The municipalities of Amiens, Rivery and Camon formed a special purpose association in 1973 (since 1977 "Syndicat intercommunal pour l'aménagement et la sauvegarde des Hortillonnages"), which has now been incorporated into the Communauté d'agglomération Amiens Métropole .
