Hoshaya

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

R. Hoschaja , in the pal. Talmud usually Oschaja , son of Chama bar Bisa , also called Hoschaja Rabba ("the great, elder") to distinguish it from the Amorae of the 3rd generation , was a Jewish scholar of antiquity, is counted among the Palestinian Amorae of the 1st generation and lived and worked in the third century AD, first in Sepphoris , later in Caesarea , where he ran a school.

He was a student of Bar Qappara and R. Chijja , teacher of Jochanan .

Like Chijja and Bar Qappara, he tirelessly collected Mishnajot on extensive travels , which can be found in the Baraita , Tosefta and also in the Talmud itself, making him an influential teacher. These Mishnayoths sometimes helped to resolve long-simmering issues (Bab Shabbat 145 b). Hoshaja is also considered to be one of the authors of the Midrash Rabba .
