Bar Qappara

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bar Qappara (so common in the Talmud ; also Bar Kappara ; actually R. Eleazar ben Eleazar ha-Qappar , also R. Eleazar ha-Qappar beRabbi ) was a Jewish scholar of antiquity, is counted among the Tannaites of the fifth generation and worked in the 2nd ./3. AD century.

He was the son of Eleazar hakappar and belonged to the circle of the Mishnah editor Judah Hanassi and among them to the older, very independent colleagues with deviations from and additions to the Mishnah. He taught in Caesarea and had a "school in the south" (probably Lydda ), where he perhaps edited Sifre Zuta . Because of his cheerful disposition and his wit, he was banned from his circle several times by Judah Hanassi, who is described as very serious.

As far as we know today, he was the only Hebrew poet at that time and known as such until his halachic meaning was better appreciated.

He was with Judah Hanassi when he died and brought the news of death to the people in a poetic lecture.

Among Bar Qappara's disciples one suspects Hoshaja , Yehoshua ben Levi and Resch Lakisch .
