Hoselaw Chapel

The Hoselaw Chapel is a chapel belonging to the Presbyterian Church of Scotland . It is located near the Scottish village of Town Yetholm in the Council Area Scottish Borders . In 1998 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists of the highest monument category A.

history

In 1412 a chapel was built on the site. No remains of this building, which is subordinate to Kelso Abbey , have survived today. The current chapel was built in memory of the local pastor Thomas Leishman . The Glaswegian architect Peter MacGregor Chalmers was responsible for the design of the 1906 building .

description

The Hoselaw Chapel is isolated on a side road around 3.5 km northwest of Town Yetholm and 1.5 km west of the English-Scottish border. Its masonry consists of embossed sandstone , which was hewn into irregular blocks with natural stone details . All building openings close with round arches . The wooden entrance portal is on the left on the south side. A small sacristy extends from the north side. The east side closes with a rounded apse . On the east gable sits a small roof turret with an open bell. The final gable roof is covered with gray slate .
