The cape was discovered in February 1911 by Lieutenant Harry Lewin Lee Pennell (1882-1916), a crew member of the Terra Nova during the Antarctic expedition of the same name (1910-1913) led by the British polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott . It is named after Walter William Archer (1869–1944), the cook of this research trip.
