history

Around 1335/41, a hospital under Grand Master Dietrich von Altenburg was set up at the existing S. Michaelis Church. This was initially in the northwest of the young city . It was destroyed and rebuilt several times in the following centuries.

Since the 17th century at the latest, the hospital has only housed retirees who spent their retirement years there in exchange for maintenance payments. Around 1700 and 1800 there were around 40 people each. In 1807/13 the church and buildings were destroyed during the Napoleonic wars and were not rebuilt afterwards. The cemetery initially continued to exist. The hospital continued to be operated in other locations; the address Schüsseldamm 1 is known for the year 1835. It existed until 1945.
