The young city (Polish Młode Miasto ) was an independent city in the area of today's Gdansk from 1380 to 1454.

location

The young town was located on the Vistula northwest of the old town . The area is located in today's Młyniska district . There are no preserved buildings. The exact location of the buildings and the city limits is not known.

history

Jungstadt 1380-1454

It is not known when the settlement came into being. In 1308, the Teutonic Order conquered the area around Danzig . In 1380 the young town received city rights under Luebian law, like the new and old town of Danzig before . This is also its oldest surviving mention. There was a St. Bartholomew's Church (mentioned in 1402), a town hall, a school, a Carmelite monastery (mentioned in 1399), a Jakobsspital and a hospital for all angels. The young town was probably not fortified, although permission for it had been given by the Teutonic Order.

Some of the citizens came from the families of the old and new town of Gdansk. They were mostly craftsmen or merchants. There were probably around 2,000 inhabitants in around 250 houses in the young city.

In 1337 the city was partially damaged by the Hussites. In 1440 she did not join the Prussian Confederation , which had formed against the Teutonic Order. This worsened the relationship with the two neighboring cities of Danzig considerably.

From 1455 the young town was dissolved after the subordination of western Prussia to the Polish king by the councilors of the old and new towns of Danzig. The Bartholomäuskirche and the Carmelite monastery were moved to the old town , the hospital of all angels remained.

Further development

Danzig 1687, former young city in the northwest of the fortifications

Since then there has been no settlement there. The area was in 17./18. Included in the fortress construction of Gdańsk in the 19th century. In the 19th century, the Schichau shipyard and industrial facilities were built there.

Since around 2000 office and commercial buildings have been built in the disused industrial area, which revive the name Młode Miasto as a historical place name. In 2018, during archaeological excavations, the remains of a house with some finds were found for the first time in ul.Rabotnicza.
