The Hospital Italiano Umberto I is a building in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo .

That in the presence of the then Uruguayan President on 1 June 1890 Máximo Santos , his ministers, the Italian ambassador representing the Italian king, the Duke of Licignano and the Count Antonio Greppi as a representative of King Umberto I of Savoy is inaugurated building in Barrio Parque Batlle on the border with Tres Cruces on Avenida Italia , Bulevar Artigas and Calle Jorge Canning . The architect Luigi Andreoni was responsible for the construction . The style of the construction can be assigned to eclecticism and is based on the Italian architecture of the 16th century. In particular, references to Giorgio Vasari's Galleria degli Uffizi are seen here. The building complex, which is arranged in two parallel blocks enclosing three inner courtyards , houses a hospital which in 2003 had 250 beds. In 1952 the extension known as Sanatorio Italiano was added due to the exhausted capacity of the hospital . This was done under the direction of the architect Carlos Surraco . These and other structural changes impaired the original ambience of the building.

Since 1975 the Hospital Italiano Umberto I has been classified as a Monumento Histórico Nacional .
