history
The neoclassical building was built in 1865-1883 on the ruins of a Franciscan monastery . It was initially a military hospital and was named Hospital Maria Pia in honor of Queen Maria Pia of Savoy . After the country gained independence in 1975, it was renamed after the Mozambican resistance fighter Josina Machel in 1977 and declared a historical cultural asset in 1981. The hospital, which was very dilapidated during the Angolan civil war , was completely renovated and refurbished between 2002 and 2005 thanks to a grant from the Japanese government. In 2010 it had 534 beds.
