The name cannot be clearly interpreted etymologically; it is common among the Venetians , the Illyrians and the Etruscans . The third king of Rome , Tullus Hostilius , attests to the old age , but also names such as the Curia Hostilia .

The gens first appeared in the republic during the 2nd Punic War and was divided into the three lines of the Catones , Mancini and Tubuli . Only the Mancini could with Aulus Hostilius Mancinus 170 BC. BC, Lucius Hostilius Mancinus 145 BC BC and Gaius Hostilius Mancinus 137 BC Reach the consulate . In the 1st century BC BC all lines are obviously extinguished and more bearers of the name appear without cognomen . The saserae , which briefly emerged at the time of Caesar, are not among these hostilii .
