from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hostus Hostilius (also Hostius Hostilius ) is a hero of Roman mythology .

He was a distinguished man from the Latin city of Medullia , emigrated to Rome after the city was conquered by Romulus and took part in several wars of the Romans. He married the Sabine Hersilia , who had come to Rome in the course of the robbery of the Sabine women . When the war against the Sabines broke out, he was one of the bravest Roman fighters, but fell in the battle between the Palatine and the Capitol . His death sparked an escape for the Romans, which only ended when Romulus vowed a temple to Jupiter . Hostus Hostilius was buried in the Roman Forum , where a funerary monument was erected for him, the inscription of which paid tribute to his bravery.

He left a childhood son who became the father of Tullus Hostilius , the legendary third king of Rome.
