The Hotchkiss H-39 , or Char léger modèle 1935 H modifié 39 , was a light tank made by Hotchkiss et Cie . It was used by the French army in World War II and represented a more powerfully motorized development of the H-35 type . A total of 692 Hotchkiss H-39s were built.
history
Since the H-35 with the 57 kW (77 PS) engine turned out to be too slow, a much more powerful Hotchkiss six-cylinder engine with 88 kW (120 PS) was installed in its successor , which significantly improved the performance. However, he kept his out-of-date armament with a 37 mm cannon and a 7.5 mm machine gun, which could not pose a threat to the German Panzer III and IV . Although it was not put into service until 1939, the H-39 was no longer competitive in 1940 and was mostly destroyed or captured during the western campaign .
After the defeat of France , the tanks captured by the Wehrmacht were used both in the Russian campaign and in the German Africa Corps , albeit mainly as ammunition tugs. After the Second World War, ten copies were sold to the Israel Defense Forces .
