history

In 1884 Anders Markusson Loen opened the 20 room Loen's Hotell . The year before, Bruce Kvamme had founded Kvamme's Hotell in the neighborhood . Economically, however, both hotels were unsuccessful and ran into difficulties. Around 1889, Loens' son, Markus Loen , who had returned from America, took over his father's hotel together with his Swedish wife Ida . With the help of savings they secured the existence of the hotel and after a few years also bought Kvamme's Hotell . The hotel was probably given its current name in 1892. He refers to Alexandra of Denmark who later became Queen of Great Britain and Ireland . At that time, many English guests were guests of the hotel.

The hotel was economically successful under Markus Loen. It was also possible to bring cruise ships to Loen, whose guests were looked after by tourists. The hotel also had a restaurant in Kjendal . After the First World War , West Hotell in Ålesund and Grand Hotel Bellevue in Åndalsnes were also part of the company. However, the two houses were sold during the economic crisis of the 1930s. Markus Loen died in 1929, the company was continued by his wife and their nine children. In 1934 the son Richard Loen became the hotel manager, who ran the company together with his wife Jenny. The Hotel Alexandra was enlarged repeatedly and had numerous well-known guests. After the expansion in 1934, the hotel was one of the largest tourist hotels in Western Norway. During a landslide in 1936 , the restaurant in Kjendal was destroyed by a tidal wave.

At the end of the 1950s, the renovation and expansion of the house began to give it its current appearance. Richard Loen died in 1965, and was succeeded by his son-in-law Eivind Grov as hotel manager. In the winter of 1968/69 the oldest part of the building was then torn down and replaced by a new building. Until 1969 the hotel was only open in summer. As part of the new buildings, it was opened all year round from 1974. In the 1980s, renovations and other modifications were made. New rooms, conference rooms and a swimming pool were created. Until the 1980s, the hotel was owned exclusively by family members, with the number of shareholders growing to over 60. The family-run shipping company Bergesen dy then joined as a partner .

The number of overnight stays rose to 70,000 overnight stays a year, with a stronger focus on the Norwegian market. Norwegian guests accounted for more than 80% of the overnight stays. In May 1996, Hotel Alexandra opened the 122-room Hotel Loenfjord .

The company now had a total of 600 beds in 313 rooms with 100,000 overnight stays per year and an annual turnover of 115 million Norwegian kroner .
