The Bel-Air Hotel is a boutique hotel in Bel Air , a district of Los Angeles ( California ). The hotel is part of the luxury hotel chain Dorchester Collection , which belongs to the Brunei Investment Agency (BIA) and thus to the state of Brunei . The hotel has 103 rooms in total and is surrounded by around five hectares of gardens. The style of the hotel is mostly based on old Hollywood .

history

The hotel was originally built in 1922 by Alphonzo Bell on approximately 24 hectares of land. Since opening in 1946, the hotel has hosted many celebrities and heads of state. Originally built as an office building and horse riding facility, it was bought in 1946 by the Texan entrepreneur Joseph Drown and converted into a hotel. Together with the architect Burton Schutt, he converted the hotel into a luxurious excursion point for distinguished people. Originally the hotel was designed in the style of an oasis . For example, visitors had to walk across a bridge to get to the hotel. In the garden there were palm trees and all year round blooming plants.

After Drown's death in 1980, the hotel was sold to the Texas Hunt family and renamed the Rosewood Hotel . The takeover changed the appearance of the hotel only slightly. The restaurant got a new head chef in Wolfgang Puck .

In 2008 the Dorchester Collection bought the hotel and closed it for a two-year renovation. The reopening took place in October 2011.

In 2014, the BIA came under fire after Brunei initiated the first phase to incorporate Sharia law into the code. In March 2019, Hollywood star George Clooney called for a boycott of the hotel after the death penalty for homosexuals was to be introduced in Brunei.
