The Hotel Central , also called Měšťanský dům (German town house ), is a former luxury hotel in the Czech city ​​of Bečov nad Teplou and one of the cultural monuments there. In its history, the building served several purposes and is known in German as the town house No. 336 in Bečov.

The building from the other side

The first owner of the house was Georg Röhm in 1876. On May 23, 1892 he sold it to Maria Schmidt. This had the building generously redesigned into a structure that is unique in the region.

After completion in 1901, Franz Bachmann, a German of Jewish descent, bought the building, which marked the beginning of the hotel with the operation of a restaurant. He had the building converted into a luxurious hotel. This later famous hotel was visited by numerous personalities. The number of visitors had peaked in the 1920s. After the Munich Agreement , the Sudetenland fell under the German sphere of influence , which posed a threat to operations. Nevertheless, Bachmann managed to hide his Jewish origins.

In 1945 Bachmann and his family were expelled as Germans and the family property was confiscated. Red Army soldiers were housed in the house immediately after the war . After their departure, the hotel was nationalized and miners working nearby were billeted. They lived there until the mid-1950s and left the building devastated.

In 1978 the condition of the hotel deteriorated more and more. A group of volunteers restored it in action z . The building became a post office and housed a café. Due to the economic situation in Czechoslovakia in the 1990s, the state had no money to maintain the business, and the building deteriorated again. On October 29, 1991 Agro Karlovy Vary acquired the property for the sum of 54,791 crowns . Today the hotel is owned by several companies and is in poor condition.

architecture

The structure is a large square building that was built in the Art Nouveau style. The facade shows pseudo-Renaissance elements. The structure is equipped with bay windows and topped with an onion roof. The south facade has six axes, followed by an east axis. The windows in the spandrels are built into the Art Nouveau facade. The rooms on the ground floor are decorated and the historical fireplace column is highlighted. The window sills are equipped with conical railings and show some baroque figures with the emblem "S".
