History and use

The original building was built from 1856 to 1858 according to plans by Christian Timmermann. It was built by shipowners who wanted to use it as a seaman's home with an infirmary. Since most of the seafarers avoided the social control that came with it, the building was also used for other purposes. For example, the tropical hospital , a navigation school , the seaman's mission and a pay office known as the “ hay barn ” were located there.

During the world wars, the house was used by the navy as a training facility. After the war, it was confiscated by the British Royal Navy for some time , and then reopened as a seaman's home. From 1975 to 1979 it was empty.

In 1979 Willi Bartels leased the brick building, which was now in need of renovation. He had it rebuilt and opened the Hotel Hafen Hamburg at the end of 1979, initially with around 100 rooms. Together with his family, he had already owned extensive real estate assets, especially in St. Pauli.

From 1984 to 1986 the building was expanded according to plans by the architects Kleffel & Köhnholdt, and between 1998 and 2000 it was extended according to designs by Meyer & Fleckenstein and converted into today's hotel complex. The neighboring former nurses' home was included in the construction. The tower was built as part of the expansion.
