The Hotel Marqués de Riscal is located in the 1000-soul wine village Elciego , in the Spanish province of Álava . It forms the core of the "City of Wine", which was tackled by the Herederos del Marqués de Riscal winery, which has existed since 1858, in 2000 and designed by the architect Frank O. Gehry . This is also where the first wine cellar “La Catedral” is located, in which wine bottles of all vintages from 1862 to the present day are kept.

The hotel was inaugurated in October 2006 with a visit from the Spanish King Juan Carlos I.

For the creation of the hotel, the winery had a modern building in mind that would evoke strong emotions. Frank O. Gehry was chosen to achieve this effect. Over a glass of wine from 1929 (the year the architect was born), the team presented the idea for the project. Mr. Gehry was attracted by the challenge of designing a hotel in the heart of a wine cellar - he had never done anything like it.

The hotel includes two restaurants ( Bistro 1860 and the Spa ), a rooftop lounge with views of the Elciego village, a wine bar , wine shop, meeting and banquet areas, and 43 rooms and 10 suites in two parts of the building (the Gehry Wing and the Spa Wing), which are connected by a glass-covered bridge.

As in Gehry's first work in Spain, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao , which is 130 kilometers away, the hotel is also clad in titanium and stainless steel. The architect integrated the colors of the winery: pink , like red wine , gold, like the net around the bottles of Marqués de Riscal Reserva and silver, like the bottle caps.

The hotel is operated by the US hotel company Marriott International , currently (in 2019) by its new division Marriott Bonvoy .
