Hotel National (Vienna)

The former Hotel National at Taborstrasse 18

The former Hotel National is a corner house in the Tabor Road 18 and Schmelzgasse 2 in the 2nd Viennese district Leopoldstadt . The building is used as a five-storey rental house. In its place was the house "Zum golden Ochsen" with a restaurant as early as 1678. This house was sold to Rosalia Klier in 1839 and demolished in 1847. The building, erected in 1848, is a little-known work by the architects Ludwig Förster and Theophil Hansen with figural decorations in the parapets and caryatids in the central axis. The former Hotel National was one of the most luxurious buildings of its time with central heating and its semicircular courtyard. One of the main attractions of the house was a roof garden with a viewing terrace.

In 2009 the former Hotel National was sold to the adjacent hospital of the Brothers of Mercy . Rumors of a possible demolition brought the building, which is under ensemble protection, into the headlines.

The Taborstrasse street sign in Yiddish, designed by the artist Sebestyén Fiumei and now attached to the house at Taborstrasse 5, was installed here for a short time in the summer of 2017.
