Mom Jeans [ mɒm dʒiːnz ] (from English mom , slang for 'mother') are a type of jeans that were popular in the 1980s and 1990s and have been back in fashion since the 2010s. They are mainly characterized by a high waistband and wide cut, tapering legs (tapered leg).

properties

The pants reach to the waist , where they are cut tight. It is wider around the thighs. It tapers towards the bottom and ends above the ankle thanks to the shortened cut. Most of the time, the trousers are made from a denim fabric with little to no stretch.

history

1980s

Mom jeans hit the market in the late 1980s. The cut should be reminiscent of the curvy silhouette of former Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe . The new jeans style was also an alternative to the skin-tight, straight-leg jeans that Brooke Shields wore in the then scandalous 1980 Calvin Klein ad. The singer Madonna was one of the first to adapt the new style.

One of the first jeans models with this cut is the so-called Pedal Pusher from the Hamburg fashion label Closed . It is inspired by a postman's uniform. She quickly became a cult model. To this day, mom jeans can be found in the brand's range.

1990s

In the early 1990s, celebrities like Winona Ryder , Drew Barrymore and Shannen Doherty began to follow the trend and made it even more popular. In the hit series Beverly Hills 90210 , the character Cindy Walsh, like her daughter Brenda, wore mom jeans. Also Courteney Cox as Monica Geller in the television series Friends was often seen in this style.

In the mid to late 1990s, the legs and waistbands of the pants widened. The waistband got lower and lower. By the end of the decade, mom jeans were out of style.

2000s

The name Mom Jeans only established itself in 2003 through a sketch on the Saturday Night Live Show about the perfect Mother's Day present. It was advertised with the following slogan: "Don't give your mother a perfume on this Mother's Day, but something that says to her: I'm not a woman anymore - I'm a mother." The video shows women wearing their pants with one fictional label called Mom wearing jeans .

The return of mom jeans

Mom jeans have slowly been back in fashion since around 2010. Stars like Kourtney Kardashian , Sienna Miller , Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid made her popular again. According to the global fashion search platform Lyst, searches for mom jeans have increased 105 percent since 2017. This officially overtook skinny jeans. Big brands like Levi's or Topshop follow the trend and bring out mom jeans.

One of the strongest proponents of mom jeans in recent years has been Barack Obama . In a 2014 interview, the former US president complained that he was "wrongly smiled at for his jeans".
