Hotel Segnes

Hotel Segnes 1874

The history of the “Schweizerhof” is closely linked to the first inn in Flims; the simple "Gasthaus zum Waldhaus", which was run by the widow Maria Schreiber-Joos in the middle of the 19th century. The Geneva draftsman Rodolphe Töpffer visited the inn in 1842 with students from his boarding school. Chur families often spent their summer holidays with the «Frau Landschreiberin».

When the widow died childless in 1869, the inn was auctioned off among the locals at a jass . The winner was the lawyer and district president Walter Candrian (1839–1890) from Sagogn . Since he himself had no use for the inn he won, his brother Mathias, who was then working as a confectioner in Stettin , took it over . He expanded it in 1870 and developed it into the "Hotel Segnes". In the summer of 1873, Friedrich Nietzsche stayed at the Segnes for four weeks and expressed his enthusiasm in letters about the baths in Lake Cauma and the whey cures .

After Mathies Candrian's death in 1893, Walter's widow Anna Candrian-Bazzell (1844–1924) took over the "Hotel Segnes" together with their children Eva, Domenic and Mengia.

Hotel Schweizerhof

In 1901, during the heyday of the Belle Epoque , Anna Candrian sold the "Segnes" with a lot of land for 240,000 francs to the "Kur- und Seebadanstalt Flims-Waldhaus", which had built the Waldhaus in 1877 . The proceeds were invested in the construction of new hotels: Daughter Eva bought the “Adula” hotel and Mengia (1873–1962) built the “Schweizerhof” together with her husband Daniel Schmidt (1872–1946). At the place where the hotel stands today, there was a large rock that was blown up in 1902. The "Schweizerhof" was built out of its ruins and opened in 1903. There were kerosene lamps in the common rooms and candles in the rooms. Electric lights were installed in 1904 and the telephone a year later. In 1906 the two villas "Helvetia" and "Gentiana" were built as branches in the immediate vicinity. The period before World War I was one of the most successful in hotel history. Twice a week there was a house ball, and bridge, tennis and dance instructors were available for the guests. Albert Einstein spent his holidays here, Empress Zita stayed in the Villa Gentiana and King Albert of Belgium and his wife stayed here incognito. The king, a passionate climber, is said to have climbed around the Segnes area every day with the Flims mountaineer Brun.

During the war, many hotels had to give up because the guests stayed away. The «Schweizerhof» survived thanks to the commitment of the family that ran it. After Daniel Schmidt's death in 1946, Mengia Schmidt and her daughter Carla (1906–1979) ran the hotel. Since 2008 the hotel has been run in the fourth generation by Sandra Stahl and Christoph Schmidt, who replaced Therese and Rudolf Schmidt. All extensions and conversions are subordinate to the historical building, so that its character has been preserved inside and outside.

In 1992 resulting movie season of 1941 born Daniel Schmid (brother of Rudolf Schmidt) whose childhood memories are processed in this hotel business to dreamy images.
