It is located at the southern end of the city of Lugano in the immediate vicinity of Lake Lugano on the area of Villa Merlina, which was known in the 19th century for its extraordinary magnificent gardens.
history
The Splendide-Royal Hotel was transformed into a hotel by Augusto Guidini senior; renovated by Paolito Somazzi 1902–1903, it is the first example of the hotel-palazzo type in Lugano to imitate the French baroque palaces. The hotel, which was initially called Hotel Splendide , opened in 1902 after the owners, the Fedele family, enlarged the existing structures and converted the villa into a magnificent building with 125 beds. The hotel soon gained a permanent clientele among wealthy Europeans who frequented the hotel especially in summer. In 1977 the Fedele family sold the hotel to an Italian hotel company, which expanded the existing building with a new wing with 53 guest rooms. Today the Splendide Royal is known as Lugano's premier grand hotel.
