The Hotel Waldkater was a well-known hotel in the Bodetal .

history

The first establishment "Waldkater" was built in 1845 and later redesigned several times. The name goes back to a story according to which a wine fan was turned into a cat as punishment. This cat is said to have saved himself from being shot by a hunter by divulging a recipe for a May drink. However, since this drink was also adulterated again and triggered a hangover in the hunter, the hunter had to save himself again and now showed the hunter a hidden treasure. With this capital, the hunter is said to have built the establishment and thus set a monument to the Panscher.

The report sounds more sober that a carter named Christoph Fessel first built a small refreshment stand in the Bodetal, which was soon replaced by the single-storey “Little Forest Cat”. In 1852 the “Großer Waldkater” hotel is said to have been added, which, along with the hotels at Rosstrappe , Hexentanzplatz and Zehnpfund, became the most famous hotels in the area. Opposite the hotel, on the other side of the Bode, is the so-called Schallhöhle , which was used for tourism until 1875.

The "Great Waldkater" later became a convalescent home and 1966 Youth redesigned and redeveloped as such in 1995, the "Small Waldkater" was after the Second World War, first used as a residence for evacuees, and later as company holidays home for Naumburg furniture craftsmen. After the fall of the Wall it was made an inn again. In 2018 the youth hostel took over the little forest cat and has been running it as a bed house ever since.

The forest cat at Fontane

Theodor Fontane toured Thale and the surrounding area several times and made the Bode Valley an important location in his novel Cécile . In the twelfth chapter of this novel, the protagonists plan an afternoon excursion from Thale; the forest hangover is also taken into consideration: "Just not Bodetal," said Gordon. “Or even that eternal forest hangover! The pure country house on Heerstrasse with a mixed air of kitchen casts and horse stables. Everywhere people and butter paper, cripples and accordions. No, no, I propose Lindenberg. "
