history

The corridor, which is only about 20 meters long and relatively low, was laid out around 1760. The resulting cave has the property of reflecting the sound more strongly, from which the name is derived.

The early 1830s the wife of a carbon master received permission to amuse the stranger paid firecrackers leave the cave. After the woman died, on April 23, 1843 the task was transferred to the Thaler gardener Heinrich Reckleben (1793-1875).

The loud detonations met with criticism from the operator of the Waldkater Hotel, who repeatedly complained. The horses there often shied away from the noise. Ultimately, the landlord managed to enforce a ban on gunfire. However, Reckleben received annual compensation from the Waldkater's landlord because of his loss of earnings. In addition, Reckleben received permission to sell the water from the spring as so-called water of life .

He advertised his water with the words:

Whoever comes to me does not come in vain,
I bring you the source of life.
And nobody died who drank from it
as long as he swung this cup!

Reckleben reported to the visitors about a countess who was supposedly once held in the cave and later murdered. To prove the truth of his story, he referred to the alleged blood on the wall, which he repeatedly renewed with paint.

Probably due to the many gunshots, Reckleben suffered from hearing loss in old age . This was his undoing in 1875. On the way home from the Schallhöhle he was run over by a beer coach. It is reported that the owner of the forest tomcat donated the largest wreath on Reckleben's grave.

After Reckleben's death, the cave was closed. Today it is locked by a lattice door. To the right of the entrance is a memorial plaque that reminds of Reckleben's activities.
