Hotels.com is a website that allows you to book hotels online and by phone . The company owns 85 websites in 34 languages and comprises over 240,000 hotels in approximately 19,000 locations. Hotels.com's business is to book hotels, guest houses , some vacation rentals, and other types of accommodation online . Hotels.com was founded in 1991 as the Hotel Reservations Network (HRN). In 2001 the company was taken over by Expedia Inc. , which now operates the website through Hotels.com LP, a limited partnership based in Dallas, Texas, USA. In 2002 the name was changed to Hotels.com.

history

Hotels.com was founded in 1991 by David Litman and Robert Diener as the Hotel Reservations Network (HRN) and offered hotel reservations in the United States via a toll-free number. In 2001 the company was taken over by USA Networks Inc (USAI), which also acquired a majority stake in the online travel booking portal Expedia.

In 2002, HRN changed its name to Hotels.com and offered online hotel bookings in addition to the offline brand 1-800-2 Hotels. In the next two years it expanded with 29 additional websites worldwide. In 2003 USAI was renamed InterActiveCorp (IAC). In 2005, IAC spun off its travel business under the name Expedia Inc. This made Hotels.com an active part of Expedia Inc.

The company has been expanding worldwide since 2002 and now has websites for North, Central and South America, Europe, Australia, Japan, China, the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East and South Africa. Customers from all over the world can book online or by phone at the multilingual call centers. Depending on the country in which the customer is booking, the calls are free or chargeable.

Bonus program

Like its competitors Agoda and Orbitz, Hotels.com offers a loyalty program. This gives customers a discount on many, but not all, hotels, regardless of the chain or type of accommodation. Provided that all nights have been booked on Hotels.com, the customer can claim a discount after every 10th night on a subsequent Hotels.com booking. The discount corresponds to the average value of these ten previous nights.

Hotel price index

Since 2004, Hotels.com has published an overview of global price trends for hotel rooms, the so-called hotel price index, twice a year. The hotel price index records the prices actually paid by Hotels.com customers worldwide per hotel room and night in the last six months. This is based on a weighted average based on the number of rooms booked in the respective market in which Hotels.com is active. The data includes noticeable price changes, a comparison between destinations and hotel types, and other analysis related to price. The hotel price index is published digitally and in print as part of the company's press work and is aimed at journalists, the media and hoteliers.

criticism

In May 2007, a class action lawsuit (Smith v. Hotels.com LP, California Superior Court, Alameda County, Case # RG07327029) was filed against Hotels.com for “persistent discrimination against persons with physical disabilities using Hotels.com's worldwide booking network Would like to use the reservation of hotel rooms, but cannot ". The company denied the allegation and disagreed with the lawsuit, but was found guilty of violating California's Unrest Civil Rights Act in one case and of violating competition law in another. Hotels.com then agreed to provide suitable information on the accessibility of the hotels offered on its website.
