history

The company was founded in the late 1990s by Michael Kenny under the name PlanetHoliday.com. The original concept was to use the emerging power of search engines to fill a perceived information vacuum of hotel and travel information.

Kenny, originally from Long Island, New York , emigrated to Thailand in the late 1990s and set up the website together with a small business on the island of Phuket . In 2002 the company moved from Phuket to Bangkok and in 2003 added PrecisionReservations.com as a partner website, designed to sell reservations through affiliate websites. Later in 2005, PlanetHoliday.com and PrecisionReservations.com were merged under the name Agoda, and then in 2007 by the Priceline Group , the world's largest online hotel room provider. The Priceline Group is listed on NASDAQ (Nasdaq: PCLN) and is part of the S&P 500 stock market index . The Priceline Group was renamed Booking Holdings in 2018 (NASDAQ-100: BKNG).

In 2016, the Priceline Group took over Woomoo, a startup based in Taipei . Agoda and Woomoo cooperate in the development of mobile apps.

In 2018, Rob Rosenstein was promoted to Chairman of Agoda and John Wroughton Brown to be the new CEO. Omri Morgenshtern was appointed as the new COO as part of the Qlika acquisition.

In July 2019, Agoda released the Mix and Save feature , which enables customers to split their hotel stays across multiple rooms to save costs. In September 2019, Agoda started a cooperation with Digitas.
