The Hottentot girlitz ( Crithagra totta , Syn . : Serinus tottus ) is a species of finch from the subfamily of the goldfinch-like . It is occasionally kept in Europe as an ornamental bird.
description
The Hottentottengirlitz reaches a body length of twelve to thirteen centimeters. The two sexes have similar plumage.
The top of the body is warm dark brown up to and including the rump and tail. The head, neck and throat are dashed gray and yellow. Males tend to be a little more yellow. The over-eye stripe is a little more noticeable in them. On the underside of the body, Hottentot girls are yellow with gray dashes.
distribution
The distribution area of the Hottentottengirlitz is the south of the Cape Province . It occurs here on mountain slopes with grassy areas and bushes.
Way of life
Hottentot girls build shallow bowl nests. The clutch usually consists of four white-shelled eggs that are incubated for 16 days. The nestling period is usually 19 days. The young birds are cared for by the male parent bird for another two to three weeks until they are independent.
