House of Night 01. Signed (English original title: Marked ) is a novel by PC Cast and her daughter Kristin Cast . He was released in 2007 in the publishing St. Martin's Griffin , is the first volume of the House-of-night - Dodekalogie the Jungvampyrin Zoey Redbird. Zoey Redbird lives with her mother and stepfather in Oklahoma . At the age of 16 she was drawn in her school with the outlines of a sapphire-colored crescent moon on her forehead, thus becoming a young vampire. In a world in which people know of the existence of vampires, she should attend the "House of Night" (a boarding school for vampires) from now on. There the drawn are accompanied on their development up to the vampire. Her strictly religious stepfather and her mother, who is heavily influenced by it, do not believe in going to school and want to stop the development of the vampire, which is impossible, since the marked young vampires either die or turn into a vampire. They call church elders to their homes. In the meantime, Zoey fled to her grandmother. There the goddess Nyx appears to her , whom she describes as her “first true daughter of the night” ( cherokee : a-ge-hu-tsa v-hna-i Sv-no-yi) and her “eyes and ears”.
When she arrives at the “House of Night”, like every vampire, she receives a mentor - in her case Neferet, high priestess of the Nyx and head of the boarding school. That Zoey is not a normal young vampire is shown above all by her mark, which is much more developed than the normal young vampire. Zoey is brought to her room by Aphrodite, who immediately makes it clear to her that she is in charge of the school: “So that you know: I 'll tell you where to go. Me and no one else. If you want to get along, you better not forget about it. If so, you can expect a lot of trouble. "
On the first day, Zoey quickly befriends Stevie Rae, with whom she shares a room, and her circle of friends. In the school there are new subjects such as horse riding, fencing etc. in addition to the usual school subjects such as Spanish. In addition, rituals take place again and again, which are held either for the whole school by Neferet or in the circle of the "daughters and sons of darkness" by Aphrodite. The latter is a kind of student association that only accepts the best students. As a potential talent, Zoey is invited to the rituals and for the first time unwittingly drinks blood that strengthens vampires but does not need them to survive.
After Zoey learns that the wine was mixed with the blood of a classmate during the ceremony, she leaves the building and meets a cat (Nala) she has chosen and her former best friend and ex-boyfriend who she is want to "get out of school". Her ex-boyfriend Heath assumes they are still together. After being scratched by Zoey, he willingly lets her lick the blood from the wound. This process can lead to an imprint on the respective vampire or young vampire in humans. After Zoey asks him to leave, she meets Erik Night, Aphrodite's ex-boyfriend. A romance develops between the two.
During the rituals, Zoey notices that she has an affinity for all five elements, something that no vampire or young vampire has ever had before. She told her friends and a circle as "the dark daughters and sons" Aphrodite a big mistake at the second ritual and in the invocation of ancestors also conjures up evil spirits, they want to kill Heath. Zoey is 16 years old, was drawn by a scout (Volume 1) and becomes the youngest high priestess of the goddess Nyx.
