Houston and Kilellan Parish Church

The Houston and Kilellan Parish Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Houston in the Council Area Renfrewshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish Monument Lists in Monument Category B. Inside the church there are also two older statues that are listed in the highest Scottish monument category A.

history

The earliest church in what is now Houston was probably built in the 8th century near what is now Greenhill Farm . The oldest church building still preserved in fragments today is the Kirk of Kilallan, four kilometers west of the village . It dates from 1635 and became redundant and abandoned after the merger of two parishes in 1771. Church life shifted to the location of today's church. The building located there was demolished in 1795 and replaced by a new building. This was again torn down in 1874 to make room for today's Houston and Kilellan Parish Church. Fragments of the older neo-Gothic church were integrated into the new building . The donor had it erected in memory of her late son, Alexander Archibald Spiers of Elderslie , who was elected to represent Renfrewshire in the House of Commons shortly before his death .

description

The building is at the end of Kirk Road in the northeast of the village. David Thomson was commissioned as an architect to design a neo-Gothic building. The building has a crenellated bell tower with a slate-covered pyramid roof . The masonry is around 1.2 m thick.

The two listed statues show a knight and a noblewoman. They stand on separate plinths and were created around 1455.
