Houston is a town in the center of the Scottish Council Area Renfrewshire . It is located about eight kilometers northwest of Paisley and 16 km southeast of Greenock . Houston has grown together with the two neighborhoods Crosslee and Craigends . Houston and Kilellan Parish Church , located in Houston, is a Grade B listed monument. The statues located there are listed in the highest Scottish monument category A.
history
The place name is derived from Hew's Town and goes back to a castle by Hugo de Kilpeter . In 1781 parts of the castle complex were torn down and the old town abandoned. At the same time, a new settlement consisting of 35 houses along two intersecting streets was built at the current location. Wool mills later settled in Houston.
While 613 people lived in Houston in 1841, the population had only increased slightly to 658 by 1971. In 2011 there were 6,396 people in Houston.
traffic
Houston is connected to the trunk road network via a side road of the A761 . As early as the middle of the 19th century, the Glasgow and South Western Railway Houston connected to the rail network with its own station on the Bridge of Weir Railway . Later a second station followed on the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway of the Caledonian Railway . However, both were outside the village, so that only slight growth impulses came from the connection. The stations have both been given up in the meantime. Glasgow International Airport is seven kilometers to the east. Renfrew Airport , located south of Renfrew , was in operation until 1966 .
