(21662) Benigni is an asteroid of the central main belt , which was discovered on September 1, 1999 at the Santa Lucia Stroncone Observatory in Italy ( IAU code 589) near Terni in Umbria . Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had already occurred on January 7, 1998 (1998 FB 119 ) as part of the LONEOS project of the Lowell Observatory in Arizona .
The asteroid belongs to the Eunomia family, a group named after (15) Eunomia , to which probably five percent of the asteroids in the main belt belong. The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (21662) Benigni are almost identical to those of the smaller, assuming the absolute brightness of 15.1 compared to 13.9, asteroids (134706) 1999 XK 202 .
(21662) Benigni was named on January 7, 2004 after the Italian film actor and director Roberto Benigni . On May 23, 2005 an asteroid of the middle main belt was named after Benigni's wife Nicoletta Braschi : (31605) Braschi .
