Houtermans is an impact crater on the eastern edge of the front of the moon , south of Mare Smythii , southeast of Kiess crater and south of Kao . The crater consists of two heavily eroded, largely overlapping partial craters.
The crater was officially named in 1973 by the IAU after the German physicist Friedrich Georg Houtermans (1903–1966).
