Kao is an impact crater on the eastern edge of the front of the moon on the southern edge of Mare Smythii , east of Kiess crater and immediately north of Helmert , with which it merged. The crater is very flat, since the interior of the lava the Mare was flooded.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1982 after the Taiwanese astronomer Ping-Tse Kao .
