The Houtz Bank ( English is) a submarine bank in the Antarctic Ross Sea . It lies in front of the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf .
The New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it after the geophysicist Robert E. Houtz of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University , who from the 1960s to the 1980s was one of the first geophysical surveys in the area of the Ross Sea and other parts of the Southern Ocean .
