In the inner courtyard ( cream ) of a mosque , a Houz is used for ablutions (ritual washings, see Wuḍūʾ ). In the courtyard of (traditional) private houses, it usually fulfills purely aesthetic functions and is used for air cooling . The houz is an essential element of the Persian garden .

In Bukhara , Uzbekistan , several Hovuz were laid out in central locations in the historic old town and are accessible to the public. They are fed by an ancient stone canal Shahrud . The Hovuz Bukhara are part of the UNESCO World Heritage .
