Howard Cooke
Sir Howard Felix Hanlan Cooke ON , GCMG , GCVO , CD (born November 13, 1915 in Jamaica - † July 11, 2014 ) was Governor General of Jamaica from August 1, 1991 to February 15, 2006 .
Life
In his younger years Cooke was a teacher and became chairman of the Jamaica Union of Teachers . During this time he also worked for the insurance industry . In 1958 he became a member of the parliament of the West Indian Federation and after 1962, when Jamaica gained independence, a senator and a member of the House of Representatives of the country. In the 1970s he was a minister in the government led by Michael Manley . Cooke's tenure as Governor General began on August 1, 1991.
At the end of his tenure as Governor General, at the beginning of 2006, he was the first incumbent to swear in his successor, Kenneth Hall .
