Sir Howard Davies

Sir Howard Davies (* 1951 ) is a British historian and business economist and currently professor at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris . From 2003 to 2011 he was director of the London School of Economics and Political Science .

Career

Davies studied history and foreign languages at Merton College of Oxford University . He then also obtained a Master of Science degree in Business Administration from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University . After a position as private secretary to the British Ambassador in Paris, he worked from 1982 to 1987 for the London office of the management consultancy McKinsey . This was followed by activities in the British Audit Commission (comparable to the German Federal Audit Office ), in the British employers' association and finally, as deputy director, in the Bank of England . Before his appointment as director of the prestigious London School of Economics, which corresponds to the position of university president, he was the chairman of the UK Financial Services Authority .

Director of the LSE

When Davies took office at the LSE in 2003, a financier and banker followed in the footsteps of such popular predecessors as Anthony Giddens and Ralf Dahrendorf , both of whom are scientists themselves. In this respect, the choice of the responsible commission seemed surprising, but it does reflect the turn of the LSE and its graduates towards the City of London. The appointment was preceded by a long search for a suitable successor for Giddens, in the course of which Mary Robinson had turned down an offer. Davies used the first months of his tenure to push ahead with the structural redesign of the campus.

On March 3, 2011, he submitted his resignation as director of the LSE in connection with financial donations from the Libyan Gaddafi family to the LSE. After the geographer Judith Rees temporarily succeeded Davies, the post of director has been regularly held by the US sociologist Craig Calhoun since September 2012.

Honors

Since Davies was beaten to a Knight Bachelor in 2000 , he has been allowed to use the title "Sir". His former college in Oxford awarded him an honorary fellowship in 2004 .
